Second Grade

Hello Second Graders!

The summer break is a great time to practice all of the reading skills you learned in first grade. In second grade, we will focus first on finding a just right book. What does that mean? A just right book is one you can read like a storyteller, one that has a few new words, but not so many that you can't read it smoothly, and one you don't want to put down!

Here are a few recommendations for book series that might be just right for you:

Little Critters books by Mercer Mayer
Clifford books by Norman Bridwell
Henry and Mudge books by Cynthia Rylant
Amelia Bedelia books by Peggy Parish
Arthur books by Marc Brown
Nate the Great by Marjorie Weinman Sharmat

If you're looking for a challenge, try out:

Mercy Watson books by Kate DiCamillo
Hey Jack! books by Sally Ripin
Billie B. Brown books by Sally Ripin

When you're finished, make sure you talk to someone about what you read. What was the story about? Do you have any questions? Why do you think the book had that title? Were there any tricky words?

You can also practice your reading on Raz-Kids. Just type in the user name mknudsengrade1

Finally, you can always visit Storyline Online to hear stories read by actors or http://storytimefromspace.com/  to hear a story read from space.

I can't wait to hear all about your reading in the fall! Have a great summer!
